Guest Speaker: Barbara Shade
Barbara, a native Californian, was raised in Hollywood among artists and musicians in the entertainment community. She attended Chouinard Institute and Art Center School of Design and studied independently with many leading watercolor painters.
She taught watercolor classes and workshops at Brandes Art Institute in the San Fernando Valley, at the Janss House in Thousand Oaks, at Carmel and the Eastern Sierras for many years. Barbara also has done painting demonstrations for numerous art clubs.
Following a painting trip to China in 1981, she developed a body of work from her experiences there and was hired as a background painter to help create a Chinese fairy tale, “The Magic Pearl,” for ABC TV at Film Roman Studio. In 1997, she won an individual Emmy award for this film as Background Artist.
She worked in the animation industry for 23 years at The Walt Disney Company, Film Roman, Hanna Barbera, UPA, Format Films, and Hearst Animation, and other independent projects in a variety of mediums.
Barbara is one of the founding members of the Valley Watercolor Society and serves on the Board of Directors of VIVA Gallery in Sherman Oaks. Since retiring from The Walt Disney Company, she is finally painting for herself!
