April 2007 Meeting

Guest Demonstrator: Dulcie Adams

Adams 1Inspiration for art came to Duclie Adams at the early age of three. In her childhood youth she received her first award at the age of nine years old in her native Australia.

Her art education crossed two continents. She attended Central Tech College in Brisbane studying fine art and figure drawing. In high school she was selected out of a national high school competition to have her work of art exhibited at the prestigious Carnegie Art Institute for a month. Dulcie furthered her study in commercial art at the Los Angeles Trade Tech College. She completed a college degree for a teaching credential to teach commercial art while holding a position in the advertising department at the May Company.

While married and raising a family she has worked in various art oriented positions. They include silkscreen printing, portraits, and illustration.

Adams 3Though occasionally teaching painting, she is now retired and painting subjects that inspire her. She loves painting animals. “When I paint, I feel the spirit or soul of the subject whether it be a landscape, still life, portrait or animal, to the point that I talk to my canvas and they start talking back to me. By this, I mean, if I look and listen, the painting tells me what it needs and how to paint it. It is similar to an actor getting into a role he has to play. I become one with the canvas until it is completed, regardless of the style or technique. Usually I have a mental image of the painting, before I even start, and after I’ve been working for several hours, I see everything around me as a painting with oils and brush strokes of colors. It’s wonderful!”
