May 2019 Paint Rag

Volume 77, Issue 3

You are invited to attend a joint meeting of the two clubs: The California Art League and the San Fernando Valley Art Club. The highlight of the meeting will be a demonstration by Beth Summers, who will show us her palette knife painting techniques using acrylic. Beth often paints outdoors, and her palette knife style creates wonders.

Beth Summers is a plein air artist with a background in art from her childhood that includes credentials in education, music and psychotherapy.  She finds God’s poetry in nature. She paints in acrylics with a palette knife to sculpt texture on her canvas.  Her urgency to see colors in rivers, mountains, and fields as they play on her canvas, makes her paintings fun for others. She has close to a thousand of her works in the homes of collectors.   One collector recently said, “I can put your painting in my home, and visit that place with its color and fragrance in my imagination whenever I want..”

She takes her paints wherever she goes in her world adventures and in her motorhome. She has shown in places that include Greece, Germany, Africa, Italy, Galapagos Islands, Chile, Argentina, Russia, Peru, Spain, Iceland, Australia, and Nepal.

From a trip in the Galapagos Islands with astronomers taking photos, her painting of a total eclipse was published in the magazine, Astronomy.

She shows in galleries in California and in her own Creekside Studio Gallery in Porter Ranch. She does workshops and demonstrations for art groups as well.

The meeting is on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 and the doors open at 6:30 pm. The meeting and demonstration start at 7:00 pm. We have a Mini Art Show for members of both clubs to share their work, and a raffle benefiting the Miriam Thorim Scholarship Fund. There will be refreshments, Starbucks coffee and good conversation, too.

President’s Message

Dear Members and Friends,

Our artistic journeys take many paths and it is wonderful to see such diverse art created by our members on display.

Congratulations to all who participated in our exhibit “Journey into Spring“ at Carter Sexton. It is a good-looking exhibit and shows a variety of visions and art styles produced by our members on their own personal art journeys.

Congratulations also to the winning art, chosen by our judge Helene Jukoff. They were: First Place, “Umbrian Rooftops,” an oil painting by Jacqueline Daugherty, Second Place, “Farm and Flower Field,” a watercolor by Trisha Bennett and, Third Place, “Japanese Tulip Tree,” a watercolor by Bennett Levin.  Honorable Mentions went to an acrylic “Tide Pool” by Patti Hume and “Riveter Rosy’s April Hike,” a mixed media painting by Clark Branson.

The last award is “The Peoples Choice” chosen by the votes of Carter Sexton’s customers, and the winner will be announced at the May Meeting.

I also want to thank Carter Sexton for the opportunity to exhibit and show our art to many people. They have been very helpful in lots of ways. They sent our exhibit information out to their large customer email list. They let us have our Reception there, and they also put the art up on the walls and handled any sales. That made it convenient for us, and we did not have to take turns in the gallery. I hope that our artists will check out and support Carter Sexton whenever they are looking for art supplies.

Be sure to come to our May meeting with the wonderful Beth Summers showing her palette knife techniques.

Trisha Bennett

Thank you, Sharon Weaver!

We want to thank Sharon Weaver for the enjoyable demonstration she gave us at our April meeting. She worked in oil to paint a lovely mountain scene with trees. She is a great teacher and excellent demonstrator! Not only did she have examples of the various steps she takes to create her art, but she clearly explained her painting process while she demonstrated. She spoke about her preferences, her philosophy and how to avoid mistakes. Her demonstration was a pleasure to watch.

Sharon also donated a painting to the raffle for the Miriam Thorin Scholarship Fund.  (At the left, Sharon with raffle winner, Arlette Menard)

Thank you, Sharon.
