Instead of the normally scheduled January 2, 2018 club meeting, there was an Art Show of NAMI/DBSA Students on Saturday, January 6th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the San Fernando Valley Art and Cultural Center, 18312 Oxnard Street, Tarzana. "Come and see what has been accomplished through the art program see the beautiful landscapes, impressions, abstracts and more. Spend an evening chatting with these marvelous artists." Join us for our June painting demonstration by Christina Ramos. She plans to show us her Still Life Painting techniques Christina Ramos is a nationally recognized artist from Southern California. Specializing in figurative realism, Christina was recently named by American Galleries as one of America’s Great Painters. Raised in a family of artists, craftsmen, and musicians, Christina’s talent was recognized at an early age. Although she studied Architecture and Interior Design during college, it was not until she was home raising her four children that she began focusing on painting. She refined her skills in figurative painting at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art. Her work has been shown throughout the United States and has been honored with awards from esteemed jurors like Max Ginsburg, Dean Mitchell, Tony Pro, and Kristin Hoerth, Editor and Chief of Southwest Art magazine. This will be a “hands on” workshop led by Cheryl Scheer for effective digital editing of your own art photos on your own laptops, smart phones or tablets. Kris Reinke hosted a show at the San Fernando Valley Arts and Cultural Center from October 13—31, 2015 on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. The title of the show was “Haunted. Fall’s Best Provocative, Evocative Art.” The reception was Saturday, October 17.

To celebrate the coming of summer, there was an Appetizer and Dessert Potluck. Members brought savory and sweet finger food. Drinks, as usual, was provided.
San Fernando Valley Art Club sponsored “All Things Bright and Beautiful” at the Thousand Oaks Community Gallery, 2331 Borchard Road, Newbury Park, CA 91320. The show ran from August 2 to August 27. The take-in day was be August 1, and the show closed on August 27 (with take down on the 28th). The reception took take place on Saturday, August 6 from 2:00-6:00 pm. Peter Kraus, this year's March demonstrator, was the judge of the show and there was $800 in prizes awarded.

Jennifer Bentson talked about "How To Paint the Oaks" and how she gained a grant to paint the Oaks of Pasadena.
For those who brought their own paints and sketch pads, Jennifer guided them through trying their own painting of the Oaks.
There was food, wine and soda along with live music by Steve McCrosky to paint by.
Chuck Kovacic demonstrated the use of water-based oils and plein air painting. He also give a short talk about his trip to China.
Sasha Tarakanov-Plax demonstrated still life in oil and/or watercolor while mentoring in all mediums.
Special Mini Art Show at the Monthly San Fernando Valley Art Club Meeting
This special mini show was for "mini" art done in February and March.
Size: no larger than 16 square inches (4x4, 3x5 or 2x8, or 1x16). Sculpture and 3D limited to 16 square inches (4x4x4). All media was welcome.
Prizes: First Place - $20, Second Place - $10, Third Place - $5 (Must attend March 7th meeting to enter or win). Winners were chosen by popular vote. Mini easels were provided.
Jane Thorpe is a commercial artist who also works in fine art. Her current focus is on plein air painting in oil. She demonstrated plein air using former nocturne/ full moon studies.

Arlene Weinstock did a presentation on her colored pencil technique with pet portraits and landscapes. She also give a 20 minute slide show about optical mixing and frottage (obtaining textural effects or images by rubbing lead, chalk, charcoal, etc. on paper laid over a granular surface). Supplies were handed out for artists to experiment with frottage.

Eco Treasures showed how to reuse materials that they brought to the meeting. The audience participated in the creative art experience.

“Award winning watercolorist Fealing Lin was born in Taiwan and began her journey into artistic expression as a protege of renowned professor Ching-Jung Chen in Taiwan.” She continued to develop her painting style here in the United States. “Fealing combines semi-abstract strokes and impressionistic concepts to elicit life and movement in her portrait and figure paintings.” She paints in a unique way, building transparent layers that show the features of her subjects with a watercolor style that reveals them as unique individuals.
Fealing has won many awards and her work has been published in art magazines and books. She is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, and she belongs to Watercolor West and the Missouri Watercolor Society as well. She has been juried into many national exhibitions and she teaches throughout the United States.
